19 Sep Dear Lonely Planet: Edmonton Is So Much More Than “Frigidly Cold”
I recently read and article on Buzzfeed about a Lonely Planet guide to Edmonton that wasn’t the most friendly. This article not only ruffled the feathers of locals, but the office here so much I wanted to write about this gem of a Canadian city with a big middle finger up to the writer over at the Lonely Planet.
“Modern, spread out and frigidly cold for much of the year, Alberta’s second-largest city and capital is a government town that you’re more likely to read about in the business pages than the travel supplements.”
— Lonely Planet
Instead of bashing them right back, let us share with potential visitors on what we love to do in Edmonton, as well feedback from our clients who have come here. Edmonton is full of great people, great food and a whole whack of outdoor and indoor activities locals and tourists will absolutely love. Lets forget about Lonely Planet and focus on what’s great about Edmonton.
We also want to hear from local Edmontonians in the comments below and tell us what you love about your city. Send us and our readers tips, what’s new out there and what’s coming.
Where To Stay
There are many options for staying in Edmonton, since we tend to send our guests in style these hotels have always treated us and our guests right. If you’re looking for ultra luxury or something more boutique, Edmonton has all the bases covered and then some.
Fairmont Hotel Macdonald
Whether you’re visiting Edmonton or a local on a staycation, there are a many great options but it’s hard to beat the service and style of a Fairmont. When we’re in town the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald has always treated us right and there’s always something going on here. Since we’re a Virtuoso agency we might be a tad bit biased with the Fairmont, but if you’re wanting fantastic food and service they’re second to none.
Union Bank Inn
With that being said, the last time we came to Edmonton I booked a few nights at the Union Bank Inn, a stunning little boutique hotel with a whole lotta charm. This hotel was once the Union Bank of Canada and I fell in love with its layout and style right away.
Where To Eat
Oh how I could write a book on this topic. I hate to say it but outsiders don’t know what a foodie-centric city Edmonton is and that’s something we hope to help change. Every time we’re in town we do a lot of walking around the city during the day and drinking during the night. So everything from breakfast to late night eats is on point here so bear with me.

While I’ve only scratched the surface I think it’s safe to say that the Lonely Planet can f#$% right off. We want to hear about amazing things to do in Edmonton so please drop it in the comments below or give us a shout. We’re also looking for someone local who would like to help plan amazing escapes for our clients and give them a taste of the real Edmonton, not from someone who’s been there once or twice.
